Esperance WA

The friendly town of Esperance in southern Western Australia is lovely, picturesque, with clear water and clean beaches. Very much a small coastal town but with all the facilities and requirements most families and travellers would need. Playgrounds and entertainment options for little ones are in good supply. The climate was great- grey but warm and the people friendly. Most people did remind us that they were a long way from Perth (Which admittedly, is true) but we've travelled to some very remote places so this felt like glorious civilisation. After working our way through Eucla (first town after the WA border) and Norseman. By the way- when they tell you that you cannot buy fresh fruit and vegetables (after surrendering them at the border checkpoint) until well after crossing the Western Australia border heading west- they are correct! After examining the maps- I felt certain they were exaggerating. But, no and we were most happy to get to Esperance and a supermarket.

 Lucky Bay

Just down the road, heading east we were hoping to camp at Cape Le Grand National Park, but the weather turned wet and miserable so we stayed in a caravan park cabin. A bit claustrophobic but still much better than being stuck in a wet tent! One of our day trips ended up on the beach at Lucky Bay- a glorious spot, with white sands, clear water and interesting rock formations. Apparently when the tide is right you can drive the whole way from Esperance/ Lucky Bay to Cape Le Grand on the beach. We didn't get the chance to try it, but thoroughly enjoyed our brief time on the sand in between rain showers.

Our trusty Snowy coped well with the loose sand entering the beach and then cruised along nicely.

 Always a shell finding mission.

 My beautiful family.
