Crossing the Nullabor

Plenty of people make this epic journey more than once, some never and for us, well we'll have to wait and see. Being blown out of Streaky Bay and leaving in such a rush we were keen to just get moving, hopefully towards calmer (and warmer) climes. The road itself was in reasonable condition, but with a headwind our fuel consumption obviously increased markedly. We stopped along the way here and there when we could get a glimpse of the sea and amazing cliffs. Everyone needed to stretch their legs and while there were no playgrounds for our youngest explorer, she still found plenty of interesting things to amuse her.

Daddy aka. "The Flyman" was one of them...

Penong, near Ceduna- town of 100 windmills. The wells were sunk from 1868 to 1884 and each is privately owned. There are actually 26 which service the township.

We stopped off to view the famous Great Australian Bight at the Marine Park. The cliffs (and flies) were nothing short of impressive. The bight is a large open bay straddles the states of South and Western Australia and is characterised by cliff faces (sometimes up to 60 metres high), rocky outcrops, great surf beaches and during the right season- whale watching. The season apparently begins in May but the whales were a bit tardy, or forgot to wind their watches so we missed out. But we did see this little guy on the path.

 The Bunda Cliffs.

With the gorgeous Southern Ocean as backdrop.

And a great aboriginal legend...

He sure was popular! (I love you Flyman x)

South Australia- Streaky Bay, Speed Point

We arrived at Streaky Bay, S.A. with high hopes. The town is beautiful, set around a calm waterway, complete with recently installed shark safe swimming area. Waking down the pier we met local personalities, a pair of dolphins and a stingray cruising close to shore. The area is well known for it's surfing spots and apparently we'd just missed a well known surfing celebrity by mere days.

Here are some of the surrounding areas... amazing rock formations, where the sea blew through holes in the rock to produce eerie sounds which scared Amelia. But impressive regardless.

We spent a couple of days in some great accommodation preparing for the camping that lay ahead. We explored the area searching for the perfect campsite. And we found one at Speed Point- or so we thought! Set in amongst sand dunes we tried to protect ourselves from the wind.

Plenty of shells to collect and arrange.

 One of the locals!

A happy camper- before the 40 knot winds...

The classic comment from Amelia came at 3am as she joined us in bed... "Daddy why do you like camping?"

Needless to say we packed up fairly smartly as soon as daylight arrived (and we weren't the only ones- a mass evacuation occurred before 7.30am.)
